Is He Talking to Other People? How to Ask Without Being Clingy (Lines That Work)

Dating & Crushes·

In the talking stage, it is common for someone to be chatting with more than one person. Ask once, honestly, share your own rule in one line, then judge by what they do next. Here are lines you can copy and signs to watch.

Early in the talking stage, it is normal for someone to be chatting with more than one person. Instead of guessing from reply times, ask once and honestly, add your own rule in one sentence, and then judge by what they do over the next week. That is the least exhausting way to find out. Below are lines you can use as they are, plus a simple test for when it is time to move on.

This post comes from Blurry dating notes. We wrote it after a common question kept coming up in the talking stage: “We text every day, but am I the only one?”

Is it normal to talk to several people in the talking stage?

Yes. Until two people agree to be exclusive, many people keep a few conversations going, especially on dating apps. Calling it “playing games” too early can push away someone who was actually leaning toward you.

The real question is not whether there are others right now. It is how long things stay that way. If weeks pass and nothing moves forward, that is when to check.

Why guessing makes it worse

  • Reading into online status or likes: it never gives a clear answer, only more anxiety.
  • Hinting instead of asking: “Guess you’re busy with other people lol” sounds like a complaint, not a question.
  • Pulling back to test them: replying slower on purpose just breaks the conversation.

Lines to use: ask once, honestly

SituationWhat to sayAdd your rule
Texting daily for 1–2 weeks“Can I ask you something honestly? Are you talking to anyone else right now?”“When I like someone, I focus on just one person.”
After two or three dates“I feel like we really click. Are you seeing anyone else at the moment?”“I’m not seeing anyone else right now.”
Texts slowed down suddenly“You seem busy lately. Are we still good?”“I’d rather be honest than wait and wonder.”
Still chatting on an app“Do you talk to a lot of people here? I’m only talking to one or two.”“If we click, I like to keep talking for a while.”

If they answer, “Honestly, I talked to a few people at first,” that is not a red flag. It is an honest answer. Ask what they want now, and keep the conversation going.

Actions over answers: 3 signs they are focusing on you

  1. They text first, regularly. If the chat only continues when you start it, you may not be a priority yet.
  2. They make specific plans. Not “let’s hang out sometime,” but a day and a place.
  3. They remember what you said. Bringing back something you mentioned days ago is one of the clearest signs of interest.

When it is okay to move on

  • You asked honestly and they keep dodging the question.
  • Almost a month of texting, but no plan to meet.
  • Plans keep getting postponed and never rescheduled.

You do not need a long goodbye. “I’d like to get to know one person slowly, so I think this is where I stop” is enough.

FAQ

Is talking to multiple people in the talking stage the same as being strung along?

Not by itself. It becomes a problem when you ask directly and keep getting vague answers, or when the texting goes on with no intention of moving forward.

When should I ask?

After one or two weeks of daily texting, or after a few dates. Too early can feel heavy; too late and resentment builds up quietly.

What if they say they are not sure yet?

That is an honest answer too. Share your rule once more, then watch how their actions change over the next week.

One note from us, since this is the Blurry blog: Blurry is a dating app where profile photos start blurred and get clearer as you chat, so conversation comes before looks.
