How Fast Should You Reply on a Dating App? Data From 1,884 Chats
We counted 1,884 Blurry chats (Aug–Oct 2026). Chats answered within 5 minutes kept going 86.8% of the time, within 30 minutes 84.6%, after a full day 51.2%. Here's what that means for reply timing, plus the busiest day and hour to message.
On a dating app, replying within about 30 minutes is plenty fast, and replying within a few hours is still fine. In 1,884 Blurry chats, conversations whose first reply came within 5 minutes reached 10+ messages 86.8% of the time, and within 5–30 minutes 84.6%. The real drop starts after 3 hours (59.8%) and bottoms out after a full day (51.2%). So there's no point in waiting on purpose to look less eager, and no need to answer within seconds either.
This is a data post from the Blurry team. We counted chats on Blurry, a dating app where profile photos start blurred and clear up as you talk. The sample: every chat created between August 2 and October 31, 2026 that had at least one message, 1,884 chats and 98,908 messages. We only counted timestamps and message counts. Nobody read any message content, and nothing here can identify a user.
Does reply speed actually matter?
Yes, but less than people think in the first half hour, and more than people think after a few hours. Here's how often a chat turned into a real conversation (10 or more messages from both people combined), grouped by how long the first reply took.
| Time to first reply | Chats that reached 10+ messages | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Under 5 minutes | 86.8% (369 of 425) | Great, but not required |
| 5–30 minutes | 84.6% (192 of 227) | Practically the same as instant |
| 30 minutes – 3 hours | 76.5% (192 of 251) | Still a healthy chat |
| 3–24 hours | 59.8% (143 of 239) | Noticeably cooler start |
| More than a day | 51.2% (21 of 41) | Coin flip, but not over |
One honest caveat: this shows a pattern, not cause and effect. People who are already excited about a match tend to reply faster, so speed is partly a symptom of interest rather than the reason a chat works.
Is replying right away “too eager”?
Our numbers give no reason to hold back. Chats answered within 5 minutes did slightly better than those answered in 5–30 minutes, not worse. If you're free and you want to reply, reply. If you're busy, a short placeholder keeps things warm better than silence:
- “Ha, love that. In a meeting, I'll send a proper answer tonight!”
- “Okay I need a minute to think about that one. Back in a bit.”
- “Driving right now, but I want to hear the rest of that story later.”
How long does it usually take to get a reply?
The typical (median) first reply on Blurry came 19.5 minutes after the first message. About 6 in 10 first messages got any reply at all (62.8%, 1,183 of 1,884), so silence on some matches is normal, not a sign you did something wrong.
Most replies come early: 36% within 5 minutes, 55% within 30 minutes, 76% within 3 hours. Of the chats still unanswered after a full day, only 5.5% ever got a reply. A day is a reasonable point to stop waiting and put your energy into conversations that are moving.
What's the best day and time to message?
Sunday. It carried 20.3% of all messages, the most of any day, while Friday had the fewest at 11.5%. Sunday saw about 1.76 times as many messages as Friday.
By hour, the busiest stretch was 9 to 11 p.m., with 30.1% of all messages, peaking at 10 p.m. (10.9%). The quietest hour was 4 a.m. These hours are in Korea Standard Time (UTC+9), so if you live elsewhere, read it as “late evening is prime time” rather than an exact clock.
How long until you actually see each other?
On Blurry, photos unblur as a conversation goes on. Across the 233 chats where both photos became fully clear, the median was 229 messages and about 22 hours (0.91 days) from first message to last. In other words, a good back-and-forth over roughly one day is usually enough to get from strangers to seeing each other's face.
FAQ
Should I double text if they don't reply?
Wait at least a day, then send one new, easy question, not a repeat of your first message. If that gets no answer either, move on.
They took a day to reply. Are they not interested?
Not necessarily. Half of the chats with a first reply after more than a day still reached 10+ messages. Whether they ask you something back says more than how long they took. See signs that matter more than reply speed.
What should my first message say?
Something specific and easy to answer beats a generic “hey.” Here are first messages that get replies.
Limits of this data
- These are Blurry users only, so the numbers won't match every dating app.
- Chats that started in late October had less time to collect late replies, so late-reply rates may be slightly understated.
- Message content wasn't analyzed. Counts and timestamps only.
