First Date Drinks: 4 Rules, What to Say, and a Safety Checklist

For first date drinks, plan on one drink, ask your date’s pace instead of matching it, and keep the conversation as the main event. Ending after one round leaves both of you wanting a second date, which is the whole point. Below are four simple rules, lines you can actually say at the bar, and a five-point safety checklist for meeting someone new.

This guide comes from the Blurry dating notes team. We wrote it after a popular post this week where someone said, “I want to grab a drink with my boyfriend tonight… oh right, I don’t have one.”

First date drinks or dinner?

Drinks are the lighter choice. A drink takes 45 to 60 minutes, costs less, and gives either person an easy exit. Dinner locks you in for two hours before you know whether you click. If you are unsure, suggest drinks at a place that also serves food, so you can order a snack if the conversation is going well and leave politely if it is not.

As for timing, an early evening slot, around 6 to 8 pm on a weekday, keeps the date short and natural. Late-night first dates tend to turn into “one more round,” which brings us to rule one.

4 rules for first date drinks

Rule Why it works What to say
1. Stop at one Leaving on a high note gives you a reason to meet again “Let’s keep it to one tonight and try that other bar next week.”
2. Ask their pace Matching drinks is how nights go sideways “Are you a slow sipper or a quick one? I’m definitely slow.”
3. Let talk be the snack Drink talk runs out fast; food and stories don’t “What’s the best bar snack you’ve ever had?”
4. Repeat it sober A tipsy “I like you” is hard to trust “What I said last night, I’m saying it again today.”

Stop at one, plan round two later

Saying “let’s do this again” at the end of one drink is more powerful than a fourth round. You leave with a clear head and a plan, and your date remembers the conversation instead of the last blurry hour.

Ask their pace, don’t match it

Asking how someone usually drinks is not a challenge, it is a courtesy. If they stop at two beers, slow down with them. If they don’t drink at all, pick a mocktail or a non-alcoholic beer together and move on.

Let the conversation be the snack

Questions about favorite spots, food, and funny bar stories keep a date going far longer than “what are you drinking?” Still looking for someone to share that drink with? Our guide on where to meet people to date in your 30s covers the routes couples actually use.

How to date when you don’t drink

You can still say yes to “drinks.” Order something non-alcoholic without explaining yourself, or suggest a place with good coffee and late hours. A simple line works: “I don’t drink, but I love bar food, so I’m in.” Most people care far more about the conversation than what is in your glass. If staying in is more your style, our guide on dating as a homebody has more ideas.

Lines for asking about drinking, by moment

Moment Opening line Follow-up
Making plans “Are you more of a bar person or a coffee person?” “Let’s find a place that does both.”
Ordering “What do you usually go for?” “I’m a two-beers-max kind of person.”
After the first glass “Another one, or switch to something soft?” “I’ll take it slow too.”
They don’t drink “Then I’ll just have one.” “Let’s pick the place with the best fries.”
Saying goodbye “That was the perfect amount of night.” “Same time next week?”
Chat screen where he asks how much she usually drinks, she says two beers and she is more into snacks and chatting, and he suggests just one drink with conversation as the snack

In this week’s Blurry webtoon, Grace spends Friday night on her couch with two cans of beer after watching couples toast through a bar window. Then Ryan messages her. He asks about her pace, she says two beers is her limit, and he suggests one drink with conversation as the snack. That exchange is rules two and three in action.

Safety checklist before you go out

Card listing a five-point first date safety checklist: busy place, ride home, drink in sight, share location, water after the second drink
  • Choose a busy place you have been to before.
  • Know how you are getting home before you leave.
  • Keep your drink in sight. If you left it, order a new one.
  • Tell a friend where you are and roughly when you will be done.
  • After the second drink, add a glass of water.

If you are cutting back on alcohol for health reasons, talk to a doctor first. This guide is not medical advice.

FAQ

How many drinks on a first date?

One or two is plenty. The goal is a clear conversation and a second date, not a long night.

What time should first date drinks be?

Early evening on a weekday, roughly 6 to 8 pm, keeps things relaxed and gives both of you a natural end point.

Is it rude not to drink on a first date?

No. Order what you like and keep it simple. A good date will be more interested in what you say than what you order.

One note from the Blurry team

Since this is Blurry’s blog, one note about our app: on Blurry, profile photos start blurred and become clearer as you keep talking, so questions like “what’s your pace?” come before looks, just like in the webtoon above. Here is where to find Blurry if you want to try it.
